Rome Claims Region Title In Shutout Win
Team FYN Sports November 1, 2022
A big senior night at Historic Barron Stadium Friday night as the Rome Wolves
have once again claimed the region title. Rome has been extremely dominant
this season and has outscored their last four opponents 208-7. Rome has also
forced four shutouts this season while averaging 50 points per game as of late.
The Wolves hosted Creekview last night at Historic Barron Stadium in a region
showdown. The first few series for both teams seemed to be a defensive battle.
Both offenses were shut down and passing the ball back and forth with punts.
Rome would then heat up. A 32-yard touchdown pass from Rome quarterback
Reece Fountain to wide receiver Martel Hight would set the Wolves up for a run
that wouldn’t stop. Less than a min left in the first quarter someone was finally on
the board. Rome was up 7-0.
With it being Halloween weekend the Wolves would get tricky by delivering a
treat from Jaedon Harmon as he threw an 8-yard touchdown to Rome
quarterback Reece Fountain to make it 14-0 Rome with 8:50 remaining in the
first half.
The Wolves’ defense would really continue their stance on defense led by Tyson
“Pun” Brown Jr. Brown would jump in front of the play and force a dropped ball in
the backfield which allowed Brown to scoop and score to make it 21-0 with 8:18
remaining in the second quarter. Brown is a player that opposing teams must
account for and know exactly where he is at all times. Although that’s easier said
than done, what else can an offense do? The Wolves are absolutely loaded
defensively.
The breathing room for the Grizzlies would close quickly as the pack of Wolves
would smother every move they made on offense.
The very next defensive series for the Wolves, Tyson “Pun” Brown Jr would
come up once again huge by jumping in front of a screen pass for an interception
and almost take it to the Wolves den in the end zone.
Brown would be total chaos for Creekview the entire game. Brown also added a
ton of tackles and pressures throughout the game which was a big part of
Creekview not being able to sense the end zone.
The next offensive drive for the Wolves would result in a 41 yard touchdown from
a play action run from Rome quarterback Reece Fountain as Fountain would
sneak around the end to make it 28-0 3:36 remaining in the first half.
The coaches did a tremendous job by faking it to the running back to draw the
entire defense into the middle of the line of scrimmage to allow Fountain to slide
around the end to go untouched for another score for Rome.
Rome would then force a safety to make the score 30-0. This would be the final
straw for the game.
Rome claims the region title while holding an undefeated region record. The
Wolves will look to Etowah next week as they will travel away from Rome to play
at Etowah.
Rome will then look to put their focus on the GHSA playoffs. Rome will host the
first round of the playoffs at Barron Stadium. If Rome happens to win that first
round contest, the Wolves will then host the second round as well. The third
round will be a coin toss to determine who travels and who remains at home.
The Wolves will not look that far ahead as they are taking it one game at a time.
Their first goal has been accomplished and that was going undefeated in region
play and winning the region title. Next is finishing out the regular season and
making a playoff run to get back to the state title game.
The Wolves certainly have what it takes to make that run happen. The defense is
tenacious, the offense is on fire and the coaching is on point.
The player of the week is Tyson “Pun” Brown Jr.
Rome will travel to face Etowah next Friday to finish out the regular season.
Kickoff will be at 7:30pm.
