To add on to the homecoming festivities at Barron Stadium Friday night, the Wolves moved themselves into the top spot in the region with a 52-0 victory over Sequoyah.
Sequoyah came into this game with a 2-0 region record and was ranked number one in the region. Sequoyah and Rome traditional has been a back and forth matchup with many great games played. Both teams are always physical and possess speed on both sides of the football. However, the Wolves had their way in this go-around.
Rome would jump off to a quick start with a touchdown on their first possession making it 7-0 in the first quarter with 8:24 remaining. The touchdown would come on a 2 yard run by Rome runningback Jaedon Harmon.
Rome would continue driving the ball the next series by pitch and catch from Rome quarterback Reece Fountain to receivers Will Bray and DaKaylon Daniel. Both Bray and Daniel had multiple big catches in the game to set Rome up for quick scores.
Rome would soon go up 14-0 with 2:59 left in the first quarter with a 15 yard touchdown run by Jaedon Harmon. Harmon would have a monster night on the ground with rushing touchdowns.
Rome would utilize their tightend Joshua Ellard for a touchdown from Reece Fountain to Ellard. That would make the score 21-0 with 11:12 remaining in the second quarter.
Rome would play pitch and catch some more to set up yet another score on the ground with Rome runningback Chance Arthur going 5 yards out into the end zone to make the score 28-0 Rome.
The Wolves would drive once again but have to settle for 3 points with a field goal from kicker Diego Cordon.
The score would be 31-0 at half, Rome.
Rome would come out in the second half and not slow down. Rome would have yet another touchdown run from Jaedon Harmon to help the Wolves go up 38-0 with 9:17 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Rome would march 5 plays 84 yards on a drive to create a 27 yard touchdown pass from Reece Fountain to Alabama tightend commit Martavious Collins to make it 45-0 with 1:29 in the 3rd quarter.
Rome would cap off the night offensively with a touchdown run from Rome runningback Chris Smith with 5:31 remaining in the game.
The Rome defense would absolutely be tremendous as they would swarm the ball the entire night starting with star defensive lineman Tyson Brown Jr. and Stephiylan Green and company. The Wolves would only have the Chiefs in their territory once the entire night and the Wolves would quickly respond. Rome made a massive goal line stand defensively on Sequoyah to force 3 plays straight and would then block Sequoyah’s field goal on 4th down.
Tyson Brown Jr, Stephiylan Green, JT Terrell and company would be a problem for Sequoyah the entire night. The Rome defensive backs played outstanding as they didn’t allow nearly anything to go past the 50 yard line by making hits, batting down balls, and playing lockdown defense on a talented Sequoyah offense.
The Rome offensive line was stellar and they continue to show major improvement each week. Lead by Rome center William Byington, the Wolves big guys up front really gave Rome a push which allowed many touchdowns on the ground.
If the Wolves can continue to build on the momentum and execute in the ways they are doing now, Rome can be extremely dangerous going out of region play and going into playoff form.
Rome moves to 3-0 in region play and 6-1 overall.
Player of the game is Rome runningback Jaedon Harmon.
Rome will be off next week but will return to action 10/21 on the road at River Ridge for more region play.
