The Rome Wolves played in dominating fashion Friday night in week two at Historic Barron Stadium in Rome, Georgia. Another non-region contest ends up in a win for the Wolves. Lithonia coming out of region 4-AAAAA was a bit outmatched by the 6A power Rome Wolves.
Rome jumped off to a very quick start by stopping Lithonia on their first possession to take over with their high powered offense. Although last week the Wolves offense didn’t show a high powered attack, they came into form in week two. These are two very different defenses that Rome has faced between week one and week two. However, Rome still found it’s footing in fridays game and lit up the scoreboard.
Wide receiver Martel Hight had himself quite a game making a huge statment early by scoring the first couple of touchdowns for the Wolves, one of which came off a 32 yard touchdown pass from Rome quarterback Reece Fountain. Hight juked, jived, and powered his way into the end zone for the score.
The second quarter brought some other Wolves out into the spotlight like (sophomore) running back Chance Arthur, who broke a 79 yard run up the middle for a huge gain before scoring the very next play. Arthur would take the next handoff in for a 13 yard touchdown to make it 21-0 in the second quarter.
Rome had some huge plays from the secondary Friday starting with (sophomore) safety Jaedon Harmon who would intercept a pass and return it for a touchdown to put the Wolves up 28-0. Rome on their next drive would hand the ball to another key runner in Javarius McDearmont for a touchdown to make it 35-0 with 2:50 left in the first half.
In the second half, the Wolves would not slow down. Reece Fountain used his arm talent to add more points to the board by throwing a 57 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Will Bray which made it 42-0 with 10:32 to play in the third quarter. Rome would put the brakes on after one more score by (sophomore) runningback Chris Smith, who took a 15 yard run in for a quick six points. Rome would make the extra point to being the final score to 49-0.
The Rome defense was as stellar as ever. The defensive line didn’t allow any plays to form and Tyson Brown was a bit of a problem for Lithonia along with his front four teammates. Brown added to his season stats Friday after a monster game in the Corky Kell, recording a total of 14 tackles including a forced fumble and a blocked extra point. The Wolves look to bring that same energy next week as they face former region foe and rival Carrollton.
The player of the week for Rome is wide receiver Martel Hight.
Rome will travel down highway 27 to Carrollton for a huge matchup. Kickoff will be at 7:30pm at Grisham Stadium.
