Pepperell Holds On For 1 Point Victory Over Model
Team FYN Sports, TeamFYNSports August 28, 2022
Both the Model Blue Devils and Pepperell Dragons entered the second week of the season 0-1, which meant that either way, one of these teams would get their first stat in the win column.
The Dragons came into their contest with the Model Blue Devils with a specific game plan: keep the ball on the ground.
The Dragons started the game with the ball first, but two run stops by the defensive line coupled with a batted down pass on third down was enough to force them into a three and out.
However, the Dragons would respond right back, forcing a three and out of their own. The Dragons would get the ball on the Blue Devils side of the field, on the 43 yard line, giving them great starting field position.
The Dragons would capitalize on that good field position by driving to the 20-yard line and converting on a field goal, giving the Dragons a 3-0 lead just over midway through the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, returner Brant Pace was nearly able to break away from the Dragons defense, giving the Blue Devils great field position at the Dragons 37 yard line.
A holding penalty and a 6 yard loss on a run put the Blue Devils back behind mid field and ultimately killed the momentum from the return, punting the ball back away to the Dragons, who would start within their own 20 yard line.

D.J Rodgers highlighted the drive, picking up three first down runs, but an incomplete pass by quarterback Erik Jenson on 3rd and 8 would ultimately end the drive, giving the Blue Devils the ball back.
Returner Gage Owens wasn’t able to return the punt, and went out of bounds at the Blue Devils own 11 yard line.
The Blue Devils running game would pick up, allowing the Blue Devils to again drive near mid field. The quarterback duo of Blake Silvers and Jake Sanders would still not be enough to get the Blue Devils within striking range of cutting into the Dragons lead.
Running back Jermaine Campbell would put the Blue Devils offense on his shoulders on the ensuing drive, breaking off on two big runs to put the Blue Devils within 35 yards of a score. Daniel Jolly would unsigned the drive with a 34 yard touchdown run, putting the Blue Devils on the scoreboard for the first time of the season.
Dragons running back Demarcus Ragland nearly broke away on a 70 yard touchdown run, but tripped at the nine yard line, Fortunately for the Dragons, they were able to score on the very next play on a run, claiming a 9-7 lead after the missed PAT.
The Blue Devils would begin the second half on their own 30 yard line before Blue Devils receiver Kieth Sprayberry had a huge catch that took the Blue Devils deep into Dragons territory.
Brant Pace would again come down with a big catch for the Blue Devils to put them in field goal range. Dylan Silvers would connect on a 30 yard touchdown pass two plays later to again put the Blue Devils up 14-9.
The Blue Devils defensive line held the Dragons on the ensuing drive, forcing another punt, and the Dragons defense looked gassed from the previous drive, resulting in another long drive by the Blue Devils. However, the Dragons defense would step up and stop the Blue Devils on 4th down at midfield, bringing a close to the third quarter.
An incredible catch by the Dragons would put them back into striking distance to cut down the Blue Devils lead. The Blue Devils defense would again step up, this time forcing a 4th and 8, but Dragons quarterback Erik Jenson would complete a ten yard pass to move the chains for the Dragons.
D.J. Rogers would nearly come up with an 11 yard touchdown run for the Dragons, but was stopped 2 yards short of the goal line, setting up a 1st and goal for the Dragons. Two plays later, Jenson would run a quarterback sneak from the one yard line to put the Dragons up 15-14 with an impending two-point conversion attempt. The attempt was no good, but the Dragons still walked away with a 15-14 lead with six minutes left in the game.
The Blue Devils showed some fight was still left in them by picking up two quick first downs, but three straight incompletions by Dylan Silvers set up a 4th and 10 and a tough decision if the Blue Devils should go for it with 3 minutes left in the game. They did, but Silvers was intercepted by defensive back Sam Ross), giving the Dragons the ball back with less than three minutes left.
The Blue Devils defense would hold strong and force the Dragons into a 4th and 17, so the Blue Devils would get one last opportunity to win the game with less than a minute left. They would just have to travel from their own 44 yard line to get into at least field goal range for a game-winning field goal.
Silver would connect with Jolly on a 12 yard pass on the first play of the drive, and then Kieth Sprayberry on the second play to put them at the Dragons 35 yard line with 41 seconds remaining.
Three straight incompletions would then lead to another fourth down with 25 seconds left in the game, and the Blue Devils weren’t able to convert, effectively ending the game with the Dragons just needing a kneel down to secure the 15-14 victory.
