Rome Survives Late Thriller vs 7A Pebblebrook

By: Austin Butler

The Wolves hosted a very athletic and physical 7A Pebblebrook squad Friday night. Pebblebrook came in with a winning mentality right out of the gate.

The game would feature stout defenses for three quarters before the offenses would take charge for a thrilling barnburner in the fourth quarter.

With 6:47 left in the first quarter the Wolves lost a fumbled play action with Pebblebrook scooping the ball up for the score to make it 7-0.

The second quarter brought big plays from Rome. Rome runningback Jaedon Harmon took a pitch from Rome quarterback Reece fountain for a halfback pass to wide receiver D.K. Daniel for a huge gain. That gain would set up the Wolves closer to the goal line with Harmon taking it in for the score just a few plays later to even it at 7-7.

The score would remain 7-7 at the half.

In the third quarter the Wolves would drive the field but have to settle for a field goal which would put them up 10-7 with 8:39 to go in the third quarter.

With 5:23 in the third quarter, the Wolves would punch it in for a one yard touchdown run by Jaedon Harmon after a solid drive. The score would then be 17-7.

It looked as if Rome was about to pull away from the 7A opponent. Rome linebacker Alto Moore would come up big for his defense with a interception that he would return near the redzone.

Rome would then take a few penalties and a few losses behind scrimmage, in which would set the Wolves back to punt to Pebblebrook. The Falcons would capitalize from that stop by scoring a quick strike to make it 17-14 in the fourth quarter. Rome held the Falcons scoreless offensively for three quarters until Pebblebrook found a wave to put some points on the board. The score would be within three points with 11:33 left in the game.

At the 3:02 mark in the fourth quarter, Pebblebrook would score again making it 28-24. The tables had looked like they had turned in the favor of the Falcons late in the game.

Rome would then receive the ball with three minutes remaining. Rome found a push from the offensive line and got the ball down field. Rome had a timeout called with 44 seconds left and third and two to go for the first down.

Instead of getting the two yards and getting a quick new set of downs. The Wolves would go big on a off the back foot pass from Rome quarterback Reece Fountain to Will Bray for the go ahead score with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

The pack would then have to go on defense to make key stops in order for Rome to walk away with a close win.

The Wolves defensive line would come up huge making sacks to end the game. Rome wins the contest in a thriller of a score 30-28.

Player of the week is Rome runningback and saftey, Jaedon Harmon.

Rome will be on a bye week this upcoming week before hosting their first region and 6A match up with Allatoona on Friday September 23.

Kickoff will be at 7:30pm at Historic Barron Stadium.
